Understanding Your Past, Connecting With Your Present

Online Counseling & EMDR Across Texas I Evening appointments

Hi, I’m Dr. Pamela Dunn, PhD, LPC. As a therapist, I understand that life doesn’t always go as planned, and sometimes it’s hard to make sense of what we’re going through or know what to do next.

Maybe you’ve been feeling overwhelmed, struggling in a relationship, trying to manage anxiety, or carrying experiences from your past that still affect you today. Maybe you’re used to being the person everyone else depends on, but lately, you’re having a hard time managing everything yourself. Or maybe you know something needs to change, but you’re not quite sure where to start.

Whatever brings you to therapy, you deserve a place where you can talk openly, feel understood, and work through things without worrying about being judged.

I work with individuals and families experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship difficulties, parenting challenges, and major life changes. I also have experience working with children and families navigating autism, behavioral concerns, and complicated family dynamics.

My approach to therapy is compassionate, practical, and focused on what matters to you. I draw from evidence-based approaches, including cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness, solution-focused therapy, and EMDR. Rather than taking a one-size-fits-all approach, I work with you to understand what you're experiencing, recognize patterns that may be holding you back, and find strategies that fit your life.

I believe therapy should be about more than talking through problems. It should help you make sense of what you're going through and figure out what you can do differently. Sometimes that means working through past experiences. Other times, it means learning to manage your emotions, setting healthier boundaries, improving relationships, or simply finding a better way to handle the demands of everyday life.

Background & Experience

My professional background includes years of experience in mental health, family services, behavioral health, and healthcare. Throughout my career, I have worked with individuals and families facing a wide range of challenges, giving me a deeper understanding of how personal experiences, relationships, and life circumstances affect emotional well-being.

My experience includes providing therapy to adults, children, and families, as well as supporting individuals navigating crisis situations, trauma, behavioral concerns, and complex family needs. As an EMDR-trained, trauma-informed counselor with a PhD in Family Studies, I understand that what we struggle with today can often be tied to past experiences, family relationships, and the demands of everyday life. Sometimes, we get stuck in patterns without fully understanding why, or we find ourselves reacting to situations in ways we wish we could change. I work with clients to make sense of these experiences, understand what's getting in the way, and find practical ways to handle life's challenges. My goal is to help you connect the dots and find tools that make a real difference in your everyday life.

Areas of experience include:

  • Anxiety and depression: Finding ways to manage overwhelming thoughts, difficult emotions, and the stress of everyday life.

  • Trauma and past experiences: Working through painful experiences and understanding how they may continue to affect you today.

  • Relationships and family challenges: Navigating conflict, parenting concerns, communication difficulties, and changing family dynamics.

  • Children and behavioral concerns: Helping children and families address emotional and behavioral challenges, including concerns related to autism and developmental differences.

  • Life transitions and coping skills: Adjusting to changes, building confidence, and developing practical tools to handle life's challenges.

I understand that reaching out for therapy can feel like a big step, especially if you're used to handling things on your own. You don't need to know exactly what to say or have everything figured out before your first appointment..

My Approach

My approach is flexible and tailored to the person sitting across from me. I draw from different therapeutic methods depending on what you're experiencing, what you want to change, and what will be most helpful to you. Sometimes therapy involves understanding patterns that keep repeating; other times, it's about learning new coping skills, improving relationships, or working through experiences that continue to affect you.

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) – recognizing how thoughts, feelings, and behaviors influence one another and developing healthier ways to respond.

  • EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) – working through distressing memories and experiences that continue to affect your daily life.

  • Solution-Focused Brief Therapy – identifying practical solutions, setting achievable goals, and building on what is already working.

  • Person-Centered Therapy – creating a collaborative therapeutic relationship that respects your experiences, needs, and perspective.

  • Strengths-Based Therapy – recognizing your existing abilities and resources and using them to navigate challenges.

  • Interpersonal Therapy – exploring how relationships, communication, and life changes affect emotional well-being.

  • Mindfulness-Based Techniques – developing greater awareness of your thoughts and emotions and finding ways to manage stress.

  • Psychoeducation – understanding mental health concerns, emotional responses, and strategies that can help you manage symptoms.

There isn't one approach that works for everyone. My goal is to use methods that fit your needs and help you make progress toward the changes you want to see in your life.

What to Expect

In our first session, we’ll talk about what brings you to therapy, what has been weighing on you, and what you hope will change. My background in family studies, counseling, and behavioral health helps me look at the bigger picture, including how relationships, family experiences, and life circumstances may be affecting what you’re going through. Together, we’ll identify your priorities and begin finding practical ways to address them.

Therapy doesn’t have to start with a clear plan or all the right answers. We’ll start with where you are, figure out what matters most, and build from there. I offer convenient evening appointments.

Why Some people prefer to Private Pay?

Many individuals seek private pay therapy for increased confidentiality, flexibility, and personalized mental health care. Unlike therapy billed through insurance, private pay or self-pay therapy allows clients to access services like trauma therapy, EMDR, anxiety treatment, ADHD support, and help with high-conflict relationships without a formal diagnosis or limitations set by insurance.

Clients can often use their HSA (Health Savings Account)or FSA to pay for therapy and may receive superbills to apply toward out-of-network (OON) insurance benefits. This approach ensures privacy, removes barriers to care, and supports customized treatment aligned with individual goals. Whether you're looking for online therapy, individual counseling, or a therapist who offers specialized care, private pay therapy offers freedom, choice, and high-quality support tailored to your needs.

Superbills provided for out-of-network insurance reimbursement. If you are unsure of how to submit OON billing, we suggest utilizing Reimbursify.com

Care Credit options available.
